Growth loops that connect value to growth

Can useful product behaviour create the input for more valuable usage or demand?

How I use it

01

Start from useful behaviour

Look at what satisfied customers already do. Collaboration can introduce colleagues; useful content can attract a new audience; successful work can create reputation; repeated workflows can bring customers back. Each mechanism needs a reason to happen beyond helping your company grow.

02

Close the loop

Write the input, action, output and how that output becomes the next input. Label who participates and how long each cycle takes. A funnel explains progress through a journey. A loop explains how one cycle helps generate another; both can describe the same product.

03

Measure the weak link

Count eligible participants, actions, qualified recipients, activation and repeated participation. Consider saturation, overlap and the quality of resulting customers. A loop may contribute useful growth even if it does not reproduce more than one new participant per cycle.

04

Test the mechanism

Check customer motivation before adding prompts or incentives. Improve the step that prevents useful value reaching the next participant. Include privacy, consent, unwanted invitations and experience quality among the guardrails. Measure incrementality where feasible: some invitees would have arrived anyway.

Worked example

An illustrative collaboration loop

The shared work has to carry value
  1. Complete workA team gets a useful result.
  2. Share itA colleague has a reason to look.
  3. Join and contributeThe colleague gets value too.

An illustrative collaboration loop. The colleague needs a useful reason to join and contribute for another cycle to happen.

A team completes useful work → shares the result with a colleague → the colleague joins and contributes → the team can complete more useful work. The shared result carries value and creates a reason to participate.

If 100 active teams each send two relevant invitations and 20% of recipients activate, that is 40 activations before accounting for duplicate recipients or people who would have joined anyway. It is not evidence of self-sustaining viral growth.

The next question is whether those people get value and contribute to another cycle.

What to watch for

  • Calling any sequence of arrows a loop without showing what feeds the next cycle.
  • Adding incentives that attract low-quality or unwanted activity.
  • Assuming more data automatically improves an AI product without measuring a useful feedback effect.
Take it into the work

A brief for the next discussion.

A loop with measurable steps, a bottleneck and an explicit reason for customers to participate.
